Welkom is South Africa’s youngest city and has been the centre of the gold fields since 1947. The city sprung up after gold was discovered on a farm called St Helena.
Welkom has grown perhaps with a faster rate as Johannesburg, yet is proud of the fact that its traffic system of traffic circles were so well designed that they still have only a few traffic lights. It is in the Free State the second largest city and the core of the relatively recent geologic windfall of the Free State.

Our City History
A settlement was laid out on a farm named “Welkom” (which is the Afrikaans and Dutch word for “welcome“) after gold was discovered in the region, and it was officially proclaimed a town in 1948. The town became a municipality in 1961. The city now falls in the Matjhabeng Municipality, part of the Lejweleputswa District with a population of over 650 000 people. Welkom was officially declared a city on 14 February 1968.
