Take a look into how Welkom got started.
A settlement was laid out on a farm named “Welkom” (which is the Afrikaans and Dutch word for “welcome“) after gold was discovered in the region, and it was officially proclaimed a town in 1948. The town became a municipality in 1961. The city now falls in the Matjhabeng Municipality, part of the Lejweleputswa District with a population of over 650 000 people. Welkom was officially declared a city on 14 February 1968.

We are the first online platform solely dedicated to the local Matjhabeng Community delivering news and insights in content promotion and distribution. We operate within particular Facebook Pages and interest groups filled with entrepreneurs, marketers and others, hungry for new services and information.

Much of the history of Welkom is centred around the discovery of gold in the northwestern Free State. It was proclaimed a town in 1948, nine years after a major gold discovery was made in Odendaalsrus, just north of Welkom

Although the name means ‘welcome’ in Afrikaans, our city was actually named after the Welkom farm where the discovery of gold was made. Welkom city has a very effective road system which uses traffic circles in the majority instead of traffic lights, giving Welkom the nickname “Circle City“
