Epsom salt has many health benefits – fact or fiction?

The English naming, Epsom salt, has its name thanks to the village of Epsom in Surrey, England, where it was originally discovered. It's a chemical composition, consisting of magnesium, sulphate and oxygen and is also known as magnesium sulphates.
Magnesium deficiency
Magnesium is the fourth most common mineral in man’s body. It’s involved in more than 325 biochemical reactions that are beneficial to your heart and nervous system among others. Many people do not get enough magnesium in through nutrients. Symptoms they then experience due to the magnesium deficiency are muscle cramps or spasmas, insomnia, anxiety, high blood pressure and constipation.
How does Epsom salt work?
When solved in water, it releases magnesium and sulphate ions and although no scientific evidence exists, it is assumed that these particles are absorbed by the skin. It is also taken in mouthily as a magnesium supplement and laxative.
Uses and alleged health and other benefits
Many people, including health practitioners, claim that English salt has health benefits and use it as alternative treatment method for various medical conditions. These benefits include the following:
Promotes sleep and reduces tension
Adequate magnesium levels are essential for sleep and spanning management. It’s probably because magnesium helps your brain produce neuro-overbearers that promote sleep and reduce tension. Magnesium also helps the body to produce melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep. There are people who say that a hot bath in which English salt is solved has a calming effect – however, it can also be that it is the warm water that has the effect and not the English salt.
Relieve constipation
The reason for this is probably because magnesium helps to draw water to the colon, which promotes bowel movements. Magnesium is typically ingested in the form of magnesium citrate or magnesium hydroxide. English salt can be just as effective, although it has not been scientifically proven. It is recommended that it is used on the container according to the directions. It’s important to note that the mouthful use of English salt may have unpleasant side effects and therefore should not be used long-lasting.
Performance during exercise and recovery afterwards
Some people claim that bathing in English salt can reduce muscle pains and relieve cramps. Magnesium helps the body to record glucose and milk acid that is lost during strenuous exercise. However, research on this is limited and most medical practitioners will recommend magnesium supplements for athletes instead.
Reduced pain and swelling
English salt also reportedly helps to reduce pain and swelling associated with fibromyalgia and arthritis. This can be true because many persons with fibromyalgia and arthritis have a shortage of magnesium. In a study, 15 women suffering from fibromyalgia confirmed that applying magnesium chloride to blemishes where pain is experienced, reduces symptoms. However, the research results are based just on questionnaires and there was no control group. This is why this information should be taken with a pinch of salt.
English salt is used by some persons as beauty product. A small amount of it is made moist in a hand and inmashed on the skin as exfoliating. Use it supple to your face wash soap, to keep the pores clean. Mix equal amounts of hair refurbishment and English salt, work it through the hair, leave it for 20 minutes and then rinse it off for more volume. This material is not confirmed by research.
English salt may be useful in the treatment of symptoms arising from a magnesium deficiency in your body, as beauty product or as relaxing bath salt, or to relieve constipation. Most of the above benefits of English salt are not based on scientific research. Nevertheless, it is a fact that mouthful magnesium supplements produce positive results in persons with severe magnesium deficiency, poor sleep patterns, stress, bad digestion and muscle pains due to severe exercise. It is so advisable to, if you suspect you are suffering from severe magnesium deficiency, consult your medical practitioner, who will override appropriate supplements. Also eat as many magnesium-rich foods like meat, avocados, green leafy greens, nuts and brown rice.
