Facebook explainer: How to use new update to take control of news feed

New Facebook news feed features give users more control over the content that appears on their screens. Here's how to make the most of them.

Facebook brought back the chronological news feed, sort of, and gave its users a lot more control over the content that appears on their timelines and the interactions they have on the platform. The social media behemoth made the announcement via a blog post on Wednesday, 31 March 2021.

Following the update, users can customise their Facebook news feed by selecting a close group of people apart of your social circle whose posts you want to prioritise —and see more of. Users can also swap between the standard algorithmic feed and a chronological one that displays the latest post first.

There is also a nifty crowd control feature too that allows users to control who can interact with their public posts by selecting from a menu of options. Depending on what is selected, only the people or pages tagged in a particular post may be allowed to comment.

THE NEW FACEBOOK NEWS FEED CONNECTING USERS TO WHAT MATTERS MOST

Facebook said the goal of its news feed is to connect its users to what matters the most to them. For many people, family, friends and interests are the most important things in life. The social network is aware of this and its algorithm is constantly adapting to show users what it thinks they want to see.

“The friends you add, the Pages you like, the groups you join and the things you interact with all shape how your News Feed looks on any given day,” said Facebook in the blog post.

However, some users may not want their news feed to be curated autonomously, which is why the latest features are so important – they give the control back to the people, or at least the illusion of it. Anyway, Facebook said it wants users’ news feeds to best reflect who they are as their interests and priorities evolve.

“We also want to continue to help you understand why you see the content you do on News Feed,” added the company.

USING FACEBOOK’S UPDATES TO CONTROL WHAT YOU SEE ON THE NEWS FEED

According to the Facebook Help Centre, the news feed settings can be found as follows:

TO SEE AND ADJUST YOUR NEWS FEED PREFERENCES:

  1. Click the arrow in the top right of the screen on Facebook.
  2. Select “Settings and Privacy” then click on “News Feed Preferences”.
  3. Selecting any one of the following options will adjust your news feed accordingly:
  • “Manage Favourites” will allow you to select people and pages that you want to prioritise. If this option is turned on you will see these people’s newest posts first.
  • “Unfollow” will allow you to unfollow a person, page or group and their posts will no longer appear in your feed.
  • “Reconnect” does the opposite of the unfollow option, simple enough.
  • “Snooze” will allow you to restart, stop or add more time to your snoozes.

TO SEE THE ONLY THE MOST RECENT POSTS IN YOUR NEWS FEED:

  1. From your news feed, navigate to the menu on the left and click “See More”.
  2. Click “Most Recent”

The most recent posts from the people and pages you follow will now appear first on the feed.

TO CHANGE WHO CAN COMMENT ON YOUR PUBLIC POSTS:

The whole of Facebook can comment on your public posts by default, even people who do not follow you. To change this:

  1. Click the arrow in the top right of the screen on Facebook.
  2. Select “Settings and Privacy” then click on “Settings”.
  3. Click on “Pubic Posts” on the left.
  4. Navigate to “Who Can Follow Me” and ensure “Public” is selected.
  5. Click on “Edit” next to “Public Post Comments”
  6. Choose the group of people you want to be allowed to comment on your public posts:
  • “Public” includes everyone.
  • “Friends” includes your Facebook friends as well as the friends of anyone tagged in a particular post
  • “Friends of Friends” includes all your friends and the friends they have.
