I received a call yesterday about a Taxi that stopped on the Verkeerdevlei Plaza Road, to load a Tortoise next to the road. I immediately notified the authorities in Winburg to please dispatch officers to stop this vehicle.
The complainant then notified us that the accused has now moved further and was 30 km on the way to Ventersburg. The complainant kept visual on the vehicle, for which we are forever grateful.
I then notified the Station Commander of SAPS in Ventersburg, Station Commissioner Odendal, who then deployed his Highway Patrol to stop the Taxi.
SAPS notified us that the vehicle was pulled off 2km outside of Ventersburg.
Upon our arrival we found the Tortoise in the trailer. The Taxi Driver claimed that they were helping the Tortoise as he was crossing the road. The Tortoise is now in our care for evaluation and release. A warning was issued to the Taxi Driver with SAPS present.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to the complainant that kept visual on the moving vehicle and to Seargant Xuma, Seargant Maphisa from Highway Patrol as well as Constable Mphore from SAPS Ventersburg, and Station Commissioner Odendal.
You are all our heroes.
We always collaborate with Authorities to protect and speak for our wildlife, and are most for their continued assistance and support.
Please do not load traveling wildlife and always be on the look out for them, as they too have right of way on our roads.
To Inspector Ernest and his assistant Samuel, you are warriors of note! We salute you.
This may be a small creature, but it is a giant rescue in terms of protecting and conserving their existence.
