Easter is the most important and oldest festival and marks the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s a time for family, and what better way to celebrate than making homemade Easter Eggs together.
The Easter long weekend just wouldn’t be the same without those delicious chocolate eggs. And making them at home means you can customise and personalise your creations to your heart’s content.
Fun fact: Decorated eggs date back to the 13th century. The egg is an ancient symbol of new life and is associated with pagan festivals celebrating spring. Now you can make your own at home.
MAKE YOUR OWN EASTER EGGS
You can also make your own Easter Eggs, but you’ll need to set aside around two hours for the preparation. You will need 500g milk or plain chocolate, white chocolate for decorating (optional) and Easter Egg moulds.
Start by melting 375g of the milk chocolate in a double boiler over low heat, stirring occasionally. Once melted, temper the chocolate by adding the remaining unmelted chocolate and stir until smooth.
Tempering ensures that your chocolate is crisp, smooth and shiny.
Use a brush to cover the inside of the Easter Egg moulds with the melted chocolate; make sure you cover the inside completely. Place in the fridge for 10 minutes, and add more layers. Three layers should be ideal.
If you don’t have a brush, simply fill the mould with melted chocolate, tap it a few times and pour the chocolate back into your mixing bowl. A thin layer will remain. Simply chill for 10 minutes and repeat the process three times.
Once the chocolate is set, trim the edges with a knife and brush melted chocolate along the sides to “glue” the two halves. Then, join the two halves to form a whole egg. You can also place small treats or chocolates in the eggs before joining.

EASTER EGG DECORATION IDEAS
The easiest method is to dip a spoon in melted chocolate and dribble chocolate to create a marble effect. If you’re using milk chocolate for the egg, use white chocolate to decorate, or vice versa.
You can also decorate the outside of the egg with a piping bag. Why not write out the name of your family members and friends for that personal touch? There’s also much fun to be had by filling the inside of the egg with treats before sealing it up.
From bits of fudge and brownies and chocolate truffles or chocolate chips and sprinkles to candy, marshmallows, bubblegum, cookies, even small toys – the variations are endless.
