Wednesday 27 January 2021 was a day of high drama in the city of Welkom. Just before 12:00 the Station Chairman, Zack Rossouw, who is also the Chairman for the Community Police Forum received a call that a Ram Courier Delivery Vehicle was hijacked in Thabong. Mr Rossouw wasted no time in contacting the station manager, Brian Emmenis, who immediately compiled a voice clip and broadcasted it on GoldFM 104.3 Welkom.
He informed our radio friends where the vehicle was hijacked from and provided the necessary details. Brian, who has many years of experience in the South African Police and is very well connected in the community, also set about preparing a tactical plan. The next message He received was that this vehicle was now seen in Riebeeckstad. At this stage, Brian kept the public well-informed by means of Gold-Fm. He also contacted a helicopter that happened to be in the Welkom area.
The response from the public was huge, and soon not only the radio station but also the police and various security companies were being inundated with positive information. It was not long after that the vehicle was found in Riebeeckstad. The driver was unharmed yet the entire cargo was removed from the vehicle. The perpetrators are still on the run and the South African Police Service have initiated a full investigation into the incident. As the Chairman of both GoldFM 104.3 Welkom and the Welkom Community Police Forum, Zack Rossouw wasted no time in thanking the community for their involvement.
The fact that so many people were listening to the radio and were prepared to assist the Police, the Community Police Forum, and private security companies to combat crime on the Goldfields. Let this be a warning to potential criminals, on the Goldfields we will not let the criminals rule our city.
