This idea was conceived on on Tuesday, 01 December 2020. When pondering on this idea Welkom POP Reaction Team thought it worthy to say thanks to the Lord as it said in the Book of Psalm 116 v12 translated in Sesotho “Ke tla busetsang ho Jehova, melemo yohle ya hae e ho nna.” Twelve members contributed out of their pockets to donate groceries to certain needy families in Thabong.
Thabong SAPS Social Crime Prevention and Capt Stephen Thakeng assisted to identify these needy families who would be beneficiaries to the Team’s good gesture. The project was rolled out on Wednesday 06 January 2020 when three (3) households were visited.
Members started with a family in Sector 3 to household namely Mateye’s family. This household was identified based on the fact that were two elders who are staying with five children and three-month-old baby in a shack. The team saw it fit to donate groceries, electric appliances, vegetables and other household basic necessities. They topped it up by also giving the family cash to buy electricity.
The team proceeded to Oranje Grove, where a stay alone elder also received groceries. This random act of kindness by these SAPS members ended in Mshongoville with Bonokoane s family where two elders aged 62 and 60 are staying. Groceries were donated to this family too.
According to Sgt Thesele, they had a busiest, gruelling year in 2020 across Free State, restoring order in different towns. “This project was Team’s opportunity to say thank you to the Lord for protection and strength, by giving back to the community we serve,” concluded Sgt Thesele.
